Tips For Taking Care Of Hair Based on Hair Type

Healthy, shiny, hair is what both women and men desire. However, to attain beautiful hair it's important to understand 1) your hair type and 2) the best ways to take care of your hair based on hair type. All hair is equal, but all hair is different. Understand your hair type and you're on your way to healthy hair.

There are four basic hair types are as follows:

  • Straight - This is hair that is naturally the shiniest, and the most resilient. However, it's also the oiliest. Straight hair requires more washing than the other hair types.
  • Wavy - This is hair that is not straight but not curly either. It has less sheen than straight hair and is not as oily. It does not have to be washed as often.
  • Curly - There is an S shape to this hair type. It is full-bodied, frizzes easily and prone to damage. People with curly hair should not wash it every day.
  • Kinky - This hair type is tightly coiled and fragile. It is prone to breakage and damage and requires care to maintain softness. People with kinky hair should not wash their hair every day.

Follow these eight tips below to achieve and to maintain healthy hair.

1. Use An Alcohol-Free Conditioner On All Hair Types

No matter what hair type of hair you have, always use an alcohol-free conditioner. Conditioners that consists of a large amount of alcohol are drying for even straight hair, the most resilient. Make it a habit of choosing gentle conditioners or, better yet, look for natural conditioners. Keep in mind that you can also make your conditioners from scratch. For example, a natural conditioner you can make from home ingredients is a mixture of olive oil and honey.

In addition, all hair types, especially curly and kinky hair, should be deep conditioned once every two weeks. Deep conditioning is different than normal conditioning. When you deep condition, you leave the product on for at least a half hour. Also, covering your hair and the product with a plastic cap is recommended. The method works the ingredients into your hair and scalp. After you've let the ingredients work its way in, you rinse off the ingredients and style as normal.Your hair is left soft and shiny.

2. Cut Back On Heat Styling for Any Type Other Than Straight

If your hair is straight, you can get away with blow drying after each shampoo. However, if you have any other hair type, particularly curly and kinky, you'll need to cut back. Kinky hair is especially prone to dryness. For that reason, heat styling should be kept at the very minimum for kinky hair.

3. Use A Tea Tree Oil Shampoo or Other Natural Shampoo

Unlike conditioners, shampoos are prone to dry out your hair as it cleanses. That is why it's important for you always to use a natural shampoo, such as one made with tea tree oil. People with curly and kinky hair should reach for shampoo no more than once a week. Curly and kinky hair is less oily than straight, and wavy hair and, therefore, is less prone to attract dirt.

4. Drink Lots of Water and Eat a Healthy Diet

No matter what hair type you have, drink lots of water. Not only does water flush you out and keep your body hydrated, but it also keeps your hair hydrated as well. When you drink lots of water, your hair is less prone to dryness. Even straight hair can get dry, and drinking water helps to combat that.

Also, eat a healthy diet. If you eat only junk food and foods that are void of nutrition, you are robbing not only your body but the hair on your head. Treat your body well inside and out for great looking hair and you will see a big difference.

5. Avoid Brushes with Plastic Bristles

The tools you use on your hair, no matter the hair type, are important. Avoid brushes with plastic bristles for all hair types. Instead, buy brushes such as boar bristle brushes or other brushes of quality. These brushes cost more, but they are worth it in the end. People with curly and kinky hair should avoid brushes altogether.

6. Avoid Damaging Hair Accessories

There are all types of things you can put on your hair, but that doesn't mean that you should do it all. Rubber bands for ponytail holders, for example, are not recommended unless you have straight hair that can withstand the grip of a rubber band. Tight headbands, for instance, are also not recommended for fragile hair. Whatever you put on your hair, make sure that your hair type can withstand the accessory.

7. Sleep on Silk or Satin Pillowcases if You have Curly or Kinky Hair

Something as natural as sleep has the potential to damage fragile hair, such as curly or kinky hair. Therefore, when you sleep, choose silk or satin pillowcases if you have curly or kinky hair. These fabrics give your head a smooth surface and are, therefore, gentle on your hair. They won't cause your hair to pull or snag during sleep.

8. Take a Vitamin E Supplement

No matter the hair type, it never hurts to take a supplement that will aid hair growth. Vitamin E is an excellent nutrient for hair and hair that lacks enough vitamin E will appear dry and brittle. You can get vitamin E naturally from foods such as spinach, broccoli, nuts, tofu, avocados and more. Try to eat foods rich in vitamin E. If your diet is lacking, research vitamin E supplements offered at health food stores.

Getting great looking hair is easy to do if you know what you're doing. Understand your hair type. Once you know your hair type, act accordingly. Straight hair is the most resilient and can withstand abuse. Kinky hair, on the other hand, is the most fragile and will be less forgiving of abuse.
